I guess Disney World isn’t the only place in the Orlando area
that sells dreams. Somehow Orlando Magic owner, Rich DeVos believes that
keeping Dwight Howard in Orlando is still an option at this point. Talk about
wishing upon a star.
This trade situation is not a game of chicken that Howard
has been playing with Magic management for the past year. He is truly intent on
leaving whether by trade or as a free agent once the season is over. The Magic
have had all the time in the world to improve the team to the point where
Howard feels he can compete for a championship and they have failed miserably.
Money is not an issue for Howard since he will command a
king’s ransom wherever he decides to sign. No there is only one thing that
matters for a competitor like Howard and that is winning. Not just winning in
the regular season which the Magic do every year but winning when it counts: in
the postseason.
And this team isn’t built for deep playoff runs, at least
not as it is currently constructed. So unless the Magic have a big trade in the
works to bring in a superstar that Howard will be comfortable playing with,
then it’s pretty much a done deal for him in Orlando.
Which is looking more and more like a sure bet every day.
Most speculate that the Magic have resisted trading Howard before the All-Star
break in order to make sure they have someone representing them on their own
floor during the All-Star game which will be held in Orlando this year.
So expect this All-Star game to be Dwight Howard’s farewell
party to the people of Orlando. And a word of advice to Mr. DeVos: it’s nice to
dream but please don’t try to sell that nonsense to the people of Orlando. They
deserve better than that.
